Winter Romance

Chapter 16

Wen Yan had never been able to refuse Jin Zijin.

That husky “Okay?” was still lingering in her ears when she heard herself answer with a soft “Mm.”

Her body gave in before her mind could catch up, sealing that word of assent between their touching lips and teeth.

The sofa was too cramped to begin with.

Jin Zijin was pressed firmly against the soft leather backrest by her, sinking into it with nowhere to retreat.

Warmth seeped through the thin layers of fabric between them. Jin Zijin instinctively lifted a hand and clutched at Wen Yan’s shoulder.

The woman’s fingers curled slightly; it looked as if she wanted to push her away, and also as if she wanted to pull her closer.

She turned her head aside within Wen Yan’s airtight kiss, her breathing uneven, soft broken sounds slipping from her throat.

Wen Yan, though, simply took the chance to bury herself in her embrace.

Her teeth lightly caught at her, the pressure neither too hard nor too soft, like some large dog confirming possession; patient, persistent.

Hot, damp breaths washed over that sensitive patch of skin, stirring a fine shiver.

Jin Zijin felt as if the skin there was about to burn through, and the itch spread through every limb and bone.

She lifted a leg and nudged Wen Yan’s thigh with her knee, her voice trembling beyond recognition. “Don’t rub like that. Hurry up.”

Wen Yan lifted her head from her neck. In her eyes, the scattered light from the living room’s floor lamp reflected back, bright enough to sting.

Looking at Jin Zijin’s mist-bright eyes and flushed cheeks, she suddenly gave a low laugh; her breath brushed the corner of the other woman’s lips. “Is it okay if I don’t use one?”

The question was restrained, even polite, as if she were sincerely asking permission; but the dark tide in her eyes had already betrayed everything.

Jin Zijin thought this person was utterly wicked, still asking such a thing in such an innocent tone at a time like this.

Embarrassed and annoyed, she simply tipped her head back and blocked that infuriating mouth with her own.

She hadn’t controlled her strength well; it was more of a nibble, carrying a hint of sweet metallic heat.

Wen Yan gave a muffled groan, but the amusement in her eyes only deepened.

She raised a hand, cupped the back of Jin Zijin’s head, and deepened the kiss.

She tangled with her lips, biting and refusing to let go, brushing close at her temple and cheek.

Her fingertips were slightly cool; when they touched skin warmed by passion, she could clearly feel the person beneath her shudder hard.

The next second, Wen Yan pressed fully into her embrace, seam to seam.

Jin Zijin drew in a sharp breath; her fingers tightened at once, nails nearly digging into the fabric at Wen Yan’s shoulder.

She was like a small boat suddenly flung to the crest of a wave; she could only cling tightly to the only driftwood in sight.

——————

Wen Yan was pulled out of deep sleep by a faint vibration from her phone.

Her awareness was still half-submerged at the edge of a dream when she instinctively reached toward the bedside table; instead, her fingertips brushed warm, smooth skin.

She blinked awake in a daze. Pale morning light filtered through the gauze curtains, outlining the figure beside her.

Jin Zijin had somehow already woken up and was leaning in Wen Yan’s arms, holding Wen Yan’s phone and looking at it.

The woman wore nothing at all. The blanket had slipped down to her waist, exposing a broad expanse of snow-white, delicate back.

Her thick black curls lay lazily over her shoulders; a few strands clung to her sweat-damp neck and shoulders, tracing a breathtaking line.

Morning light gilded her with a faint rim of gold, from her long lashes to the delicate bridge of her nose to her vividly red lips.

She was frowning slightly at the screen. In profile, under the soft light, she was beautiful in a way that bordered on unreal, like an East Asian porcelain piece carefully treasured away.

The glaze was warm and smooth, yet carried a kind of refinement and fragility that made it seem untouchable.

That lazy, sated flush made her look all the more striking; the visual impact hit Wen Yan squarely in the chest before she could defend herself.

Her breath caught. It felt as though something had lightly squeezed her heart, then sent it racing without permission.

She stared for several seconds before the increasingly rich citrus warmth in the air brought her back to her senses.

The fragrance, stirred by body heat over the course of a night and mixed with something even more private, had become cloyingly sweet and lush, almost enough to drown a person in it.

A little dizzy, she blinked. Her throat was dry. “...What time is it?”

At the sound, Jin Zijin looked up. There was still a trace of unfocused drowsiness in her eyes.

She turned the phone screen toward Wen Yan and said in a low, hoarse morning voice, “Six forty-five, Dr. Wen.”

Wen Yan’s pupils contracted. “What?”

She was forty-five minutes later than her biological clock?

She had never overslept this much before.

Her memory came flooding back; flashes of breathing and tangled limbs under dim light flashed through her mind, and the tips of her ears warmed.

Damn it; she still had class this morning.

“I’m getting up first!” Wen Yan practically shot upright. The blanket slid off her body, and the cold air made goosebumps rise over her skin.

She didn’t have time to care. She grabbed the wrinkled robe from the floor, wrapped it around herself haphazardly, and rushed barefoot into the bathroom.

After a chaotic round of washing up, Wen Yan sprinted into the walk-in closet.

She gave up entirely on her usual careful coordination and grabbed a set of dark gray fleece-lined thermal underwear, then pulled on matching sports pants.

Over that she threw on a thin down liner, and finally snatched up a worn black athletic jacket.

She raked her fingers through her hair, then pulled on a plain black knit cap.

The whole outfit had no sense of style whatsoever; it was practically the definition of “casually sloppy.”

And yet when Jin Zijin propped herself up lazily and leaned against the headboard to watch, she found it strangely pleasing.

Maybe it was Wen Yan’s upright, bamboo-like posture filling out clothes with no shape; maybe it was the crisp efficiency of her movements; or maybe it was that bare face with its clean, sharp features, which in such an ugly outfit instead gave off a handsome, masculine energy.

Like a top-tier athlete ready to spring into action, or an explorer about to dive into the deep sea; beneath the plain exterior lay compact, powerful strength.

Jin Zijin couldn’t help laughing softly, her voice still a little hoarse from sleep. “Teacher Wen, you’re going to class dressed like that?”

Her tone rose at the end, full of teasing.

Wen Yan was zipping up her jacket when she looked up, a little blankly. “What’s wrong with it?”

This outfit was practical.

Jin Zijin shook her head, her smile deepening. “Nothing’s wrong with it.”

She paused, her gaze skimming over Wen Yan’s whole body like a feather. “It’s just... a little too good-looking.”

Wen Yan: “Huh?”

Jin Zijin crooked a finger at her.

After a brief hesitation, Wen Yan still got up and walked over, stopping by the bed and slightly bending down. “What is it?”

Jin Zijin suddenly lifted a hand, hooked it around her neck, and tugged her down with a little force.

Their noses were almost touching. Wen Yan could clearly see her own small reflection in those pupils, and the undisguised admiration and possessiveness inside them.

“Wen Yan,” Jin Zijin said in a very low voice, her breath brushing her lips, “do you really have to go to work?”

Wen Yan was startled by the sudden question. “I can’t just not go. It’s work.”

Jin Zijin’s fingers slid from her neck to her chest, slowly tracing circles through the sports jacket. Her eyes were languid and hooked. “What I mean is...”

“You look very tempting right now.” Her gaze traveled over Wen Yan’s clean lines with interest. “I don’t want to let you out.”

Wen Yan’s heart skipped violently, then started pounding wildly against her ribs.

She blinked, apparently giving the problem serious thought, then asked, “Then... how do I get out?”

Jin Zijin was amused by her straightforwardness; the corners of her lips curved beautifully.

After thinking for a moment, she tilted her face slightly and pointed to her own smooth cheek.

Wen Yan understood.

A smile also rippled through her eyes. She obediently lowered her head and pressed a light, quick kiss to the indicated spot.

“All right,” Jin Zijin said with satisfaction, releasing her and leaning back against the pillow with the air of a generous ruler. “Granted. Go to work.”

But before she could pull away, Wen Yan quickly leaned in and pecked her on the lips as well.

Then she stepped back two paces, the tips of her ears slightly red. “I’ll come back early today. If you’re not busy, come home and eat the meal I make?”

Jin Zijin tilted her head to look at her. One foot, hidden under the quilt, stretched out and lightly hooked around Wen Yan’s calf through the sports pants like a cat. “What kind of meal?”

She asked with great interest, her gaze appraising.

The faint touch made Wen Yan feel a little itchy; she shrank her leg back and replied earnestly, “Anything. You can choose.”

——————

In the end, Wen Yan still refused Jin Zijin’s offer to send a car.

During the morning rush, the route from the city center to the university district was famously like a parking lot; she would rather take the subway.

In the carriage, people were packed shoulder to shoulder, mixed with all kinds of smells.

Wen Yan wore her cap and held the handrail, struggling to free one hand amid the crowded mass of commuters to message Jin Zijin.

She typed carefully, one line after another: “The default password for the door lock at home is twelve digits; it’s my name plus my birthday, wenyan951225. If you have time, you can register your fingerprint and iris yourself, or I can help you tonight.”

“If you want to eat anything tonight, tell me in advance. It’s best to tell me before four, or I’m afraid it’ll be too late to prepare by six.”

“The seasonings are all in the left cabinet. The coffee beans are in the third jar on the right. The cups are in the sterilizer.”

...

Not long after she sent the messages, her phone buzzed.

Jin Zijin: Dr. Wen, you talk so much. [chin-resting.jpg]

Wen Yan stared at the screen, her expression freezing instantly.

Talk... too much?

She subconsciously reviewed the few messages she had just sent.

Were they a little too detailed?

Or did she sound too wordy, too nagging?

She wasn’t usually like this... it was just that, unconsciously, she wanted to explain everything she thought the other person might need to know.

Before she could figure it out, another message popped up.

Jin Zijin: Got it, got it. I’ll take care of it myself~

Jin Zijin: But... if you could talk this much in bed last night, that would’ve been even better. [smirking]

Wen Yan’s face went up in flames so fast it felt as if it had ignited; even the hand holding the phone trembled a little.

The noisy voices around her seemed to recede all at once. Uncontrollably, fragmented images flashed through her mind.

Dim light, overlapping breaths, Jin Zijin’s muffled whimpers by her ear, and her own silent but intense movements.

Was she really that quiet?

It seemed... kind of.

Most of the time, she simply acted, felt, and responded by instinct; words felt pale and unnecessary in those moments.

Did her wife seem to prefer more direct feedback?

Wen Yan rubbed her burning face in mild annoyance.

Yet the details from last night only grew clearer.

Jin Zijin actually couldn’t take overly intense force very well.

She was really quite delicate; whenever Wen Yan got even a little rough, she would tense all over, her fingers digging deep into Wen Yan’s shoulders like a drowning person clutching driftwood.

Until she couldn’t take it anymore and suddenly went weak.

The woman would loosen her tightly bitten teeth and collapse, panting, her gaze unfocused as she stared up at the ceiling.

Her bangs were soaked with sweat, clinging to her flushed cheeks.

So pitiful.

The whole room was filled with the rich, stubborn sweetness of citrus.

Wen Yan would hold her sweat-damp body even tighter, lower her head to rub at her hot earlobe, and ask in a hoarse voice, “One more time, okay?”

Jin Zijin usually didn’t even have the strength to shake her head; she would just bury her face deeper in Wen Yan’s neck, silent by default.

And then the tide would rise again. She would tremble and curl up once more, like a butterfly with rain-soaked wings, finally falling back into the embrace Wen Yan had been waiting for.

Later, their positions changed.

Wen Yan held her and sat facing the entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.

Outside was the city’s glittering, boundless nightscape; inside were their intertwined reflections, warm and intimate.

Wen Yan kissed her reddened ear tip and coaxed softly, “Can we separate?”

The hot breath slipped into her ear, and Jin Zijin’s whole body jolted as if electrified.

She bit her lip and did as she was told.

But Wen Yan deliberately slowed down.

Jin Zijin really loved crying; before long she started urging her again.

Wen Yan pretended not to hear: “What did you say?”

Jin Zijin tipped her head back and bit at her neck, words breaking apart. “You’re mean...”

“Wen Yan...”

You’re mean!

So mean! Big bad bully!

Jin Zijin protested, and Wen Yan once again took control of her.

She couldn’t help the corners of her lips lifting; her chest was filled with an indescribable sense of satisfaction.

She savored every tiny response from her wife; those tremors, whimpers, and pleas all became the most moving notes.

“Hey! Move aside! I’m getting off!”

A shout rang out beside her, followed by something hot bumping against her thigh. Wen Yan abruptly snapped back to reality.

It was a girl who had just squeezed on board, carrying a tea egg in her hand.

Only then did Wen Yan realize the train had reached her stop and the doors were opening as the crowd began to surge.

“Sorry!” she murmured, quickly putting her phone away and pushing through the crowd to get off the carriage.

Her heart was still pounding wildly from the memory; the heat in her face hadn’t faded at all, and she almost broke into a run as she dashed out of the subway station toward the school.

——————

Even though she hurried the whole way, Wen Yan was still nearly twenty minutes late.

Fortunately, it was only an elective course. She had posted a notice in the class group chat ahead of time, so the students weren’t surprised.

Still, when Wen Yan walked into the lecture hall with a face still faintly red from exercise and her breathing slightly unsteady, a few good-natured chuckles and whispers rose from below.

Four consecutive class periods; the material was dense, with case analysis and interactive questions.

Once Wen Yan entered work mode, she automatically blocked out all distractions.

Her expression was focused, her explanations clear, and now and then she would push up her slipping glasses with crisp, efficient movements.

By the time the bell rang, it was already 12:10 p.m.

The students filed out one after another. Wen Yan packed up her lesson plans and computer and hurried out of the teaching building.

Thinking of the morning’s “come home and eat the meal I make,” she didn’t stop at the school cafeteria; she headed straight for the subway.

Her original plan was to take the subway home, then stop by the neighborhood supermarket to buy groceries.

But when the train passed through the city center’s most bustling commercial district, Wen Yan caught sight of the huge logo of a famous luxury mall. She lowered her head unconsciously and looked at the brown enamel watch on her left wrist.

The watch rested quietly against her skin, reflecting a soft, understated sheen under the shifting light from outside.

A thought suddenly surfaced without warning.

Almost without hesitation, at the next stop Wen Yan got off with the crowd and turned toward the subway exit leading to the mall.

“Huanyu World” was one of Yun City’s top luxury shopping centers; the interior was spacious, the decor lavish, and the air was thick with high-end perfume and the smell of money.

Wen Yan wasn’t familiar with the major brands, so she could only wander aimlessly along the bright storefronts.

Crystal chandeliers refracted dazzling light; the smooth marble floor reflected her hurried silhouette.

As she passed a brand store famous for jewelry, she suddenly stopped.

In the window, on a black velvet cushion, lay a pair of earrings.

The main stones were two nearly identical emeralds, the deep lush green of rainforest.

Plump as if about to drip, crystal clear and translucent, they were surrounded by a ring of tiny, glittering diamonds. The design was simple to the extreme, yet it brought out the emeralds’ color and brilliance to perfection.

Under the light, that green seemed almost alive.

Deep, mysterious, and breathtakingly luxurious.

Wen Yan’s gaze was completely captured.

The moment she saw those earrings, she could already imagine that rich, nearly dripping green hanging from Jin Zijin’s jade-white earlobes; how perfectly suited it would be, how utterly captivating.

She glanced at the price tag.

The seven-digit number made her eyelids twitch.

About two years of her salary if she ate nothing and spent nothing.

But she could afford it.

Over the years she’d saved enough, and with some investments and financial management, this number was more than manageable.

And besides, this was being bought with money she had earned herself.

Once that thought became clear, there was no more hesitation.

Wen Yan pushed open the heavy glass door and stepped inside.

A well-trained sales associate came up with a smile. Wen Yan pointed straight at the window. “Please take out that pair of emerald earrings for me to look at.”

Ten minutes later, Wen Yan left the jewelry store carrying a delicate little bag with a dark blue hot-stamped logo.

——————

Back in the upscale residential compound where she lived, she bought the ingredients for dinner at the attached specialty supermarket.

Based on what she had observed earlier, Jin Zijin seemed to prefer flavors that were sweet and sour with a bit of heat, so Wen Yan decided to try making a Thai meal.

Lemongrass and galangal for tom yum soup; coconut milk and eggplant for green curry chicken; glutinous rice and mango for mango sticky rice, along with kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, and calamansi...

She selected each item carefully, and the cart gradually filled up.

Carrying several large bags out of the supermarket, Wen Yan planned to take a shortcut home through a side entrance.

Just as she passed a newly opened commercial side street, her gaze accidentally swept across a storefront window, and her steps came to an abrupt halt.

The display was designed quite boldly; beneath suggestive purple-red lighting were a number of oddly shaped items, full of sensual implication.

The shop sign was in cursive English, with a small line below: “Adult Goods · Couples’ Fun · Private Exclusives.”

Wen Yan’s face immediately flushed bright red. She averted her eyes at once, her heartbeat inexplicably quickening.

Last night... and the lingering memories from this morning surged back uncontrollably.

Jin Zijin’s trembling, her whimpers, sweat-slick skin, and her own almost instinctive yet admittedly clumsy roughness...

Tonight would probably be the same.

That thought made the tips of her ears even hotter, but her feet seemed to develop a will of their own, hesitating as they slowly inched toward the shop entrance.

Wen Yan took a deep breath, then darted inside like a thief.

The light inside was much softer than in the window; the air carried a faint, indescribable fragrance.

A young girl dressed fashionably and smiling sweetly immediately came up to her. “Welcome! What are you looking for, miss? We just opened, and there are lots of fun products here~”

Wen Yan’s face was so red it felt ready to drip blood. She didn’t dare look at the dazzling array of oddly shaped merchandise around her.

Keeping her eyes on the floor, she spoke in a voice as tiny as a mosquito’s buzz. “...F-finger cots.”

“Oh, safety measures are important.” The clerk’s smile never wavered, and her tone remained professional. “We have lots of types here: ultra-thin, delay type, and different flavors, like orange, green apple, strawberry, pineapple...”

“We also have some with bumps or ring-shaped ridges to increase stimulation. What size would you need, miss? We have S, M, L, XL...”

Wen Yan felt dizzy listening to her. The heat on her face almost burned through her reason. She couldn’t make sense of what those “flavors” or “ridges” meant; she just wanted to get this ordeal over with as fast as possible.

“L... L size.” She said it quickly, then added, “All... all the L sizes. One of each.”

The clerk’s eyes lit up slightly, clearly not expecting this cool, serious-looking miss to be so generous.

“Of course, I’ll prepare them right away.” Her hands moved briskly as she began packing them up, then asked, “Would you like to consider other tools as well?”

“We have some very suitable intimate products for two women to use together; the designs are very thoughtful, and they can add a lot of fun...”

“No, no need.” Wen Yan almost snatched the already-full shopping bag from her, paid at lightning speed, and fled the store without looking back.

It was as if a ghost were chasing her.

Only after she had hurried several streets away and the cold wind brushed her face did Wen Yan feel the heat on her cheeks begin to subside a little.

She lowered her head to look at the heavy shopping bag in her hand, then at the supermarket bag full of ingredients in the other, and for a moment she felt indescribably complicated.

————————

By the time she got home, the redness on Wen Yan’s face still hadn’t fully faded.

She quickly stuffed that floral bag into the very bottom of the bedside cabinet in the bedroom, as if it were some forbidden item.

Then she took a deep breath, steadied her heartbeat, and went into the kitchen.

After tying on an apron, she began preparing the ingredients.

She crushed the lemongrass, sliced the galangal, removed the chili seeds, shelled and deveined the shrimp... her movements were steady and orderly.

The tom yum soup bubbled in the pot, and the fragrant sour-spicy aroma gradually filled the room.

The green curry chicken simmered away, coconut milk blending with the strange and enticing fragrance of spices.

The mango was cut into neat comb-like slices, and the sticky rice steamed until it glistened.

In the midst of cooking, she looked around this huge, spacious house.

Cool-toned decor, minimalist lines, lacking the warmth of everyday life; it also lacked traces of another person.

Her heart moved suddenly.

Taking out her phone, she quickly placed an order for several floor lamps and scented candles with strong design sense.

Then she sent Jin Zijin a message: “Dinner should be ready around six-thirty. Come straight in and ring the doorbell.”

More than two hours later, dinner was ready.

The newly delivered lamps and candles were arranged as well.

Wen Yan turned off all the main lights, leaving only a few warm floor lamps and the flickering candlelight on the dining table.

The carefully prepared Thai dishes sat in fine bone china, bright in color and fragrant.

She even found an almost-unused off-white linen tablecloth and spread it out.

Everything was in place; standing in the slightly dim living room, she unexpectedly felt a rare trace of nervousness.

Then the doorbell rang. Ding-dong; the clear sound broke the silence.

Wen Yan’s heart skipped a beat.

She hurried to the door, but didn’t open it right away. Instead, she leaned against it and listened, then made a decision even she thought was a little silly.

She took a deep breath and yanked the door open.

Sure enough, Jin Zijin was standing outside, dressed in a capable light gray suit skirt with a beige coat over it, carrying a briefcase; it was obvious she had come straight from some formal occasion or the company.

Seeing the door suddenly open to no one, she paused, then raised a brow and cautiously called into the entryway, “Wen Yan?”

Wen Yan slipped out from behind the door and, before Jin Zijin could react, quickly and gently covered her eyes from behind with one hand.

“Don’t look,” Wen Yan said against her ear, her voice carrying a trace of barely perceptible tremor and mystery. “I’ll take you in.”

Suddenly plunged into darkness, Jin Zijin’s body stiffened instinctively for a moment. But the familiar scent lingering at her nose made her relax immediately.

Now she was even more curious; the corners of her lips lifted. “What are you trying to do?”

Before the words had even faded, she suddenly felt her body lighten.

Wen Yan’s other arm slid under her knees, and with a little force she actually lifted her into a horizontal carry.

“Ah!” Jin Zijin let out a brief cry, reflexively wrapping her arms around Wen Yan’s neck and gripping the briefcase tightly.

The sensation of weightlessness made her heart race; her fingers clutched Wen Yan’s shoulder fabric.

In the darkness, she could only feel Wen Yan moving with steady steps.

Once sight was stripped away, the other senses became extraordinarily sharp.

She smelled the enticing aroma of food in the air, mixed with a clean floral-fruit scent from some kind of fragrance.

Wen Yan’s embrace was very steady; body heat passed through the layers of clothing, dispelling some of the chill she had brought in from outside.

She had already faintly guessed what Wen Yan was doing.

A candlelit dinner?

A surprise setup?

She had encountered such scenes before in her life.

She had even seen ones more luxurious, more elaborate.

Usually she would only admire them with polite smiles, her heart calm and unmoved, even a little weary of this formulaic romance.

But strangely, being blindfolded and carried by Wen Yan now, walking through darkness and the unknown toward some “surprise,” her heart felt suspended at a delicate height.

A little uneasy, a little flustered; and more than that, an unfamiliar anticipation.

As if what was about to be revealed was not a meal, but something more precious.

This feeling, and this feeling alone, she experienced only with Wen Yan.

Wen Yan didn’t walk quickly, but the distance seemed very short.

Soon, she felt Wen Yan stop, then gently set her down.

Her feet touched a soft carpet; she swayed slightly and was steadied by Wen Yan.

The hand covering her eyes was lifted away.

Jin Zijin’s lashes fluttered; she slowly opened her eyes.

What met her gaze was a space completely different from the cold emptiness of yesterday.

Warm, hazy light fell gently from several corners; candle flames flickered over the dining table, making the elegant dishes look especially tempting.

The air was filled with the warmth of food and a clean, refined fragrance.

There were no exaggerated roses or balloons; everything had been arranged simply but with care, and precisely because of that simplicity, it gave off an awkward yet earnest solemnity.

Her gaze moved slowly over everything, finally landing on Wen Yan beside her.

Wen Yan was looking at her a little nervously, her eyes bright with obvious anticipation, along with a hint of shy embarrassment she couldn’t quite hide.

Something heavy and soft bumped against her heart.

“How long did you spend preparing this?” Jin Zijin heard her own voice; it was gentler than she expected.

Wen Yan seemed to finally relax a little. “Cooking didn’t take long; a little over an hour. The rest didn’t take much time either.”

She paused, as if remembering something important, then fumbled hurriedly in the pocket of her sports pants and took out a small dark blue box.

When she opened it, the pair of emerald earrings lay quietly on the black velvet lining.

Under the candlelight, that lush, near-dripping green seemed alive, its brilliance flowing and dazzling, throwing everything around it into shadow.

Wen Yan held the box out to Jin Zijin. Her voice was a little dry with nerves. “And... and this.”

She licked her dry lips and explained, “I bought it with my own salary. It’s not very expensive, probably nothing compared to your collection. It’s just... a little token of my heart.”

She looked up at Jin Zijin, her gaze clear and sincere, carrying careful hope. “I hope you like it.”

Jin Zijin’s eyes moved from the breathtaking green of the emeralds to Wen Yan’s face.

That always calm face now had a rare liveliness to it because of her nerves and anticipation.

Her eyes were very bright, reflecting the candlelight and her own silhouette.

The place in her heart that had been struck earlier began to overflow with warmth.

Jin Zijin said nothing. She simply lifted a hand and gently removed the diamond earrings she had been wearing, setting them casually on the table beside her.

Then she tilted her head slightly and swept the black hair falling over her shoulder back behind her ear, exposing a section of snow-white, delicate neck and a beautifully shaped ear.

She turned back to look at Wen Yan, who seemed a little stunned, and curved her lips. Her voice was soft. “I love it.”

“Put them on for me, will you?”
