Lin's Gaze, Wolf Gu

Chapter 138

"Come in."

Gu Yanqiu pushed the door open and stepped inside. The person inside did not turn around. What first caught her eye was a head of long, curly brown hair, the back of her chair resting against her waist. Her shoulders were slender, yet she carried herself with a strength that could not be underestimated.

Gu Yanqiu walked over beside her and caught sight of her face. Her features were as cold as her voice.

If Gu Yanqiu’s coldness came from deliberately maintaining a facade because of her personality, keeping people at arm’s length, then Lin Yuewei’s coldness came more from the arrogance she carried about her. This one was completely different; looking at her for too long made the whole private room seem to drop several degrees.

She must have been discussing business that morning, or was about to head to an appointment. She wore a formal silk blouse with exquisitely tailored lines, and a mist-blue coat hung over the back of the chair.

Yin Lingxi and Gu Yanqiu exchanged a glance.

"Miss Gu," Yin Lingxi said. After a pause, she added, "I’ve long admired your name. I’ve heard it like thunder."

Her voice was cool, with a faint magnetic quality.

"You flatter me." Gu Yanqiu pulled out a chair and sat down opposite her, the corners of her mouth lifting slightly. "What would you like to drink, Miss Yin?"

Yin Lingxi pointed at the pot of osmanthus tea on the table. "This is fine. Let’s get to the point."

Gu Yanqiu ordered a pot of Biluochun tea. Keeping her polite smile, she topped up the tea in front of Yin Lingxi, then folded her hands in front of herself and asked, "Miss Yin knows me?"

Yin Lingxi: "Mr. Liu came to see me."

Gu Yanqiu gently shook her head. "I’m asking about before he came to see you."

For the first time, something other than a blank expression appeared on Yin Lingxi’s face. She didn’t deny it; instead, she raised an eyebrow by the smallest amount and asked, "How did you know?"

Gu Yanqiu said, "The moment I walked in, you told me you had long admired my name and heard it like thunder."

Yin Lingxi: "That’s just politeness, isn’t it?"

Gu Yanqiu: "No."

Yin Lingxi: "Hmm?"

Gu Yanqiu smiled faintly. "Starting two days ago, you haven’t said a single polite word to me. You looked impatient the whole time; how could you suddenly start being polite?"

Besides, according to Mr. Liu, the process of finding Yin Lingxi and speaking with her had gone very smoothly, with almost no obstacles. If one day a private investigator came to you asking to look into some matters concerning your deceased mother, and might even mention your mother’s ex-girlfriend, would you obediently cooperate? Unless the other person had some flaw; in plain terms, unless they were stupid. Before meeting Yin Lingxi, Gu Yanqiu could not have been certain, but after meeting her, she knew this was definitely not a foolish person.

The only explanation was that she had known about this for a long time and had already prepared for the day someone might come looking for her.

Yin Lingxi: "…"

She had not expected that by saying one extra sentence, she would expose her hand first. This daughter of Shen Huaiyu’s really was not simple. She had been careless.

Yin Lingxi curved her lips, showing the first smile Gu Yanqiu had seen from her: "You’re very smart."

Gu Yanqiu accepted the compliment generously. "Thank you. So we don’t need to beat around the bush."

The smile on Yin Lingxi’s face gradually faded again, returning to its coldness. "Beat around the bush?"

Gu Yanqiu: "Isn’t that what this is?"

Yin Lingxi: "I never intended to beat around the bush with you. What do you want to know from me?"

Gu Yanqiu: "What happened in the past."

Yin Lingxi asked calmly, "The dead are gone. For both of us; is there any meaning in that?"

Any meaning in it?

Gu Yanqiu had asked herself this question countless times before. Did everything she was doing have any meaning? Shen Huaiyu was dead, Gu Huai had cancer, Gu Feiquan and He Songjun had also entered the family, and she already had her own family and career. As long as she stopped pursuing it, she could live a comfortable life without being crushed at every turn by an invisible mountain, without her mood repeatedly sinking into despair.

Yin Lingxi watched Gu Yanqiu’s expression. She sipped her osmanthus tea at an unhurried pace; she had been sitting for quite a while, and the tea had started to feel a little harsh on the throat. She took one sip and set it down.

Gu Yanqiu looked at Yin Lingxi and said, "It doesn’t."

Yin Lingxi opened her mouth slightly, surprised to hear that answer from her.

Gu Yanqiu didn’t give her time to speak. In a low voice, she asked, "Then where do you think the meaning of this matter lies, Miss Yin?"

Yin Lingxi frowned a little. "I’m the one asking you a question. Why are you throwing it back at me?"

Gu Yanqiu let out a soft laugh; confidence shone in her brows and eyes. "Then why did you come to this appointment?" She leaned forward slightly, fixing her gaze tightly on the other woman’s eyes. "Miss Yin Lingxi."

She called the other woman by her full name, enunciating each syllable clearly; every word landed on Yin Lingxi’s heart with just the right amount of force, as if striking a small crater into it.

"Miss Yin?" Seeing no response for a long time, Gu Yanqiu called again.

Yin Lingxi realized that, for an instant, she had actually gone blank because of the other woman’s gaze; immediately, she became annoyed with herself.

Suppressing the urge to glare at her, Yin Lingxi reminded herself that adults had to use reason to solve problems. She quietly slid her chair back a little and unfastened the first button at the collar of her blouse, as though the room were very hot.

Gu Yanqiu thoughtfully stood up and went to the wall to turn the temperature down a little.

Yin Lingxi: "…"

Gu Yanqiu poured herself a cup of tea, took a sip while waiting patiently for Yin Lingxi to continue.

This tea… hmm… it was nowhere near as good as the one Lin Yuewei brewed herself. Gu Yanqiu wasn’t an expert, but Lin Yuewei liked tea, and whenever the other woman brewed some, she would often share a cup.

What was Lin Yuewei doing now? She should have finished work and be eating lunch by now, right?

Gu Yanqiu forced herself not to look at her phone.

At last, Yin Lingxi saw a trace of something like restlessness on her calm face, and let out a quiet breath. Gu Yanqiu didn’t seem as formidable as she had made herself out to be; she had almost been fooled.

Since she had met her match, Yin Lingxi regrouped and said seriously, "I only felt that what you people were saying sounded rather mysterious, so I wanted to see what your purpose was. That’s all."

"So you don’t believe what we said at all?"

"Do you think I should believe it?"

"Then there’s nothing more to say."

Gu Yanqiu rose to her feet and nodded at Yin Lingxi. "I still have something to do, so I’ll be leaving first."

Yin Lingxi didn’t get angry either. Sitting in place, she said coldly, "Suit yourself."

Their first meeting had unexpectedly ended on bad terms.

Gu Yanqiu didn’t look back.

Yin Lingxi picked up her coat and left afterward. When she went to settle the bill, she discovered that Gu Yanqiu had already paid.

"To XX Manor," Yin Lingxi told the driver an address. She had a business appointment in the afternoon.

Gu Yanqiu didn’t become impatient just because Yin Lingxi had not cooperated. The two of them weren’t familiar with each other, and they also shared the same awkward identity; the daughter of a mother’s ex-girlfriend who had married and had children. If they had hit it off immediately, that would have been strange.

After she left the tea restaurant, she first opened her phone. As expected, she had received a message from Lin Yuewei, along with a photo of a lunch box.

[Two Trees: This crew is really rich. Every day it’s either fried pork cutlet or chicken legs; today the female lead’s team even added more food for us again]

[Two Trees: If this keeps up, I’m definitely going to get fat]

Lin Yuewei was filming on a historical fantasy drama set this time, playing a supporting role with only two weeks of shooting. Including the preparation before entering the crew, she would be home in three weeks at the latest. The male lead was a young idol, the female lead was a popular actress, and the second female lead was also a popular actress; in contrast, there were quite a few veteran and capable actors supporting them. Those traffic stars all cared about spectacle, and every so often one of them would have the crew add a meal, another would order drinks for everyone, and another would treat the cast to late-night snacks; the extravagance knew no bounds. Last night, Lin Yuewei had stepped on the scale on time and found she was 0.2 kg heavier, then complained to Gu Yanqiu for ten minutes.

Gu Yanqiu curved her lips, stopped where she was, and replied:

[It won’t make you fat. Don’t worry]

Lin Yuewei was probably still not fully busy, because she replied instantly:

[I’m definitely going to get fat. If I get fat, you’ll dislike me]

[Xi Gu: How could I dislike you?]

[Two Trees: You just want to dislike me]

That was how couples were; the two of them could go back and forth saying the same thing over and over. Gu Yanqiu didn’t have much to do in the afternoon, so she stood by the road not far from where she had parked and got absorbed in chatting with Lin Yuewei through their phones.

In the back seat of the car, Yin Lingxi looked out through the window glass at the moving vehicle and suddenly froze. That person standing in the cold wind with an uncontrollably bright smile on her face was the same Gu Yanqiu from earlier?

A hint of surprise flickered in Yin Lingxi’s eyes before she looked away.

She rubbed the surface of the shoulder bag that had never once left her sight, then warmed her hands before taking out a yellowed notebook from inside. It was filled densely with the handwriting of the same woman.

This notebook had been discovered after her mother died, when she was cleaning out her mother’s room and sorting through the belongings left behind. It had been in a locked safe at the time, and the password had been something Yin Lingxi had slowly tried one by one, a date she had never known the reason for, but which had been very special to her mother.

She flipped through a few pages. A trace of tears flashed through her black eyes; unable to bear looking any further, she put the notebook away again.

She had to make sure that Gu Yanqiu was someone worthy of trust before she could let her see the secret her mother had hidden for so many years, only to have it discovered after her death.

***

[Two Trees: I’m going to shoot now]

[Xi Gu: Then I’m heading home too]

[Two Trees: Where are you?]

[Xi Gu: Out meeting someone; I’ll tell you tonight]

[Two Trees: ok, see you tonight, muah muah]

Gu Yanqiu opened the car door and got in. The seat automatically heated up, slowly warming her numbed hands and feet. Holding down the voice message button, Gu Yanqiu sent Lin Yuewei a "muah muah," then drove home.

Her life alone had always been very regular. She slept and woke on time; other than work, she didn’t stay up late, nor did she sleep in. No matter how cold it was in the morning, she could get up for exercise, sometimes at the gym, sometimes outdoors running; the residential area had decent greenery, and the air quality wasn’t bad.

When she had nothing to do in the afternoon, she would curl up on the sofa and read novels, with a blanket over her legs; the cat at home would curl up by her hand, behaving nicely and not moving around. When she had the time, she would reach out and pet the cat.

She had always lived like this; it wasn’t especially difficult without Lin Yuewei around.

At last, the clock on the wall pointed to six in the evening. Like a timer being switched on, Gu Yanqiu began to feel restless, thinking about whether Lin Yuewei should be getting off work and when she would be free to talk to her.

The phone rang right on time.

[Yuanyuan: Weiwei is still filming. She’s expected to finish a little after seven]

[Lin Mama: Okay]

This was the habit Gu Yanqiu and Lin Yuewei had agreed on after discussing it. Every day at six in the afternoon, if Lin Yuewei couldn’t finish work for a while, she would send Gu Yanqiu a message. The number Gu Yanqiu used was still the one she had once used when pretending to be Lin Yuewei’s mother and added Wang Yuanyuan. Of course, Wang Yuanyuan now already knew that behind that identity was actually Lin Yuewei’s partner.

Lin Yuewei had taken the initiative to reveal the cards. Otherwise, if she had Wang Yuanyuan report her schedule to her mother every morning and evening, it would sound like something else entirely. In any case, Wang Yuanyuan was trustworthy, tight-lipped, and smart enough to figure it out sooner or later; it was better to just come clean early.

After learning that Lin Yuewei still had more than an hour before she finished, Gu Yanqiu went into the kitchen and fried the steak she had already taken out to thaw earlier, then made a soup and plated everything carefully. She took out a bottle of red wine, let it breathe, and poured herself half a glass.

Once everything was done, she set the meal on the table, took more than a dozen photos, picked the best one, added a filter—something she had recently learned—and sent it to Lin Yuewei. Then she ate dinner, cleaned up the plate, knife and fork, and the kitchen, took a shower, and sat down on the bed.

Picking up her phone, the timing was perfect; Lin Yuewei had messaged her five minutes ago.

[Two Trees: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH]

[Two Trees: What kind of heavenly cooking is this, what kind of heavenly wife is this, absolutely beautiful]

[Two Trees: Is a wife this gentle, capable, beautiful as a fairy, good at socializing and good in the kitchen actually real in this world?]

[Two Trees: Please stop releasing your charm everywhere!]

[Two Trees: Your culinary skills are still on duty today]

[Two Trees: I’m crying, what about you?]

Gu Yanqiu: "..."

She didn’t know whether Lin Yuewei was crying, but she did know that the other woman had definitely been secretly scrolling through Weibo again and copying all the rainbow-praise comments her fans used to shower on her, then applying them to Gu Yanqiu.

[Xi Gu: I’m crying too. Are you a fairy descending to earth?]

Back and forth; that was how a good partner should be. What was a little rainbow praise? She had done the same for Lin Yuewei while wearing a disguise before; she was very familiar with the technique.

[Two Trees: Hahahahahahaha, you’re being naughty, President Gu]

[Xi Gu: Where? You’re the naughty one; you’re still slacking off in the middle of filming]

[Two Trees: That’s because you weren’t here. You didn’t reply instantly when I messaged you at noon. Who did you go meet?]

[Xi Gu: Wait until you get back to the hotel and I’ll tell you. It’s not easy to explain in one or two sentences]

[Two Trees: Man or woman? Pretty? Cute? Criminally attractive?]

Gu Yanqiu: "..."

Lin Yuewei was becoming more and more unrestrained when she spoke. It seemed she really was doing very well in the crew and hadn’t been bullied. But with that cheeky energy, Gu Yanqiu wanted nothing more than to drag her over right this instant and do whatever, to see whether she would dare spout nonsense again.

Lin Yuewei sat in the car heading back to the hotel, teasing her wife as usual. Gu Yanqiu had already gone from her initial bewilderment to now going back and forth with her; it was a considerable improvement, and Lin Yuewei was very gratified. But when she joked about her noon meeting partner, Gu Yanqiu still answered seriously: Don’t be ridiculous.

So Lin Yuewei stopped joking and honestly waited until she got to the hotel, then went straight to her own floor. The room card beeped open the door, and after hurriedly tossing Wang Yuanyuan a "see you tomorrow," she slammed the door shut with a bang.

The phone rang with a video call invitation. Gu Yanqiu put down the book in her hands and answered Lin Yuewei’s video call.

The place where Lin Yuewei was filming was in the south. The room’s air conditioning had just been turned on, so the temperature was very low. She propped her phone on the electric kettle on the table and kept stomping her feet with both hands tucked into her pockets to warm up.

"I’m back. I’m freezing to death."

Gu Yanqiu felt the natural warmth of the room and a thread of guilt rose in her heart.

"Remember to put a humidifier in the room. If you keep the air conditioner on all night, it’ll be too dry. I put one in your suitcase."

"I’ve already taken it out." Lin Yuewei turned the camera to show her. "By the way, you reminded me of that on my first day here already."

"Really?" Gu Yanqiu smiled. "I don’t remember."

"It’s fine. You can remind me once every day. In case I forget someday and have to put on an extra facial mask; you have no idea how cold a face mask feels on your face. My face goes stiff." Lin Yuewei wore an expression of shared suffering, as if remembering something too painful to revisit.

"Poor thing."

"Exactly." Lin Yuewei opened her arms toward the camera, and Gu Yanqiu did the same. The two of them gave each other a hug across the screen.

Lin Yuewei revealed a comfortable smile. "Much warmer."

Gu Yanqiu couldn’t help laughing too; her eyes curved into crescents. "Are you being a little too dramatic?"

Lin Yuewei: "Not at all. I just like making you happy. See? The moment I said that, your eyes disappeared."

Gu Yanqiu immediately widened her eyes.

Lin Yuewei burst out laughing.

After they bantered for a while, Gu Yanqiu brought up the serious matter: she told Lin Yuewei about Mr. Liu arranging a meeting between Yin Lingxi and herself, and about their afternoon tea today ending on bad terms.

Lin Yuewei thought for a moment. "This person clearly knows something."

Gu Yanqiu said, "I think so too. But she doesn’t believe me, so I didn’t keep talking to her."

Lin Yuewei said, "She’ll probably come looking for you again."

Gu Yanqiu said, "Or wait for me to go find her?"

Lin Yuewei suddenly asked, "Is she pretty?"

Gu Yanqiu was speechless. "There you go asking that again."

Lin Yuewei raised an eyebrow. "What? Can’t I ask? Everyone appreciates beauty."

Gu Yanqiu said, "Average. I didn’t pay much attention."

Lin Yuewei was very satisfied with her answer and clicked her tongue. "Getting a ‘average’ rating from President Gu isn’t easy."

Gu Yanqiu looked like she was about to get angry, and Lin Yuewei quickly soothed her again. "I’m worried about you, you know. Look at you, out there all on your own, rich and beautiful, able to be spicy or sweet; who wouldn’t like you?"

Gu Yanqiu thought of the flowers she had kept receiving in the office from those two young master and young lady types these past few days. "In any case, I don’t pay them any mind."

Lin Yuewei caught the key point and said in surprise, "There really are?"

Gu Yanqiu admitted honestly, "It’s the two people you saw at the racetrack last time, one surnamed Ke and one surnamed Shen."

Lin Yuewei had a very good memory, and since she had gone specifically for networking that time, she had impressions of everyone there. Ke and Shen were both fairly uncommon surnames, and among those people there was only one of each. She quickly matched the names to the people.

Lin Yuewei: "You’re versatile, President Gu."

Her tone was thick with teasing. Gu Yanqiu first set down the half of her heart that had been hanging in the air; Lin Yuewei wasn’t angry. But the other half of her heart then gave rise to dissatisfaction: "You don’t even get jealous?"

Lin Yuewei said, "I do. Didn’t you smell the sourness in the air?"

Gu Yanqiu shook her head. "No." She thought that wasn’t entirely fair. She had been jealous to the point of seeing stars, while Lin Yuewei had brushed it off in just a sentence, not even mentioning the other person’s name. Could it be that Lin Yuewei didn’t like her as much? Gu Yanqiu quickly cut off that thought; she was almost shaken again.

Lin Yuewei said, "They’re no threat to me. Why would I be jealous? I trust you."

Gu Yanqiu was half convinced, half skeptical.

Lin Yuewei added, "Even if I were jealous, what good would it do? It’s not like I could run over to your side right now, drive those two people away, and warn them not to come within a step of you; or lock you in the house and not let you go out to see anyone, not let you attract any peach blossoms."

Gu Yanqiu frowned. What Lin Yuewei said made sense, but somehow it still sounded a little off.

Lin Yuewei: "So, to sum up, you definitely won’t like either of them, and I don’t have the energy to spare. Jealousy is bad for your health; a symbolic little bit is enough. You can’t really take it to heart and argue over it."

Gu Yanqiu: "Oh."

Lin Yuewei: "See? My way of handling it is absolutely right. Learn from me next time; don’t get jealous over meaningless things. Those people are all paper tigers. We two are as solid as gold; there’s nothing to be afraid of."

Gu Yanqiu’s tone rose a little. "Oh?"

Lin Yuewei said anxiously, "I’m going to take a shower now. I still have to study later; tell me good night before you sleep tonight."

Gu Yanqiu obediently answered, "Okay."

Lin Yuewei puckered her lips and leaned toward the camera, planting a loud kiss.

Gu Yanqiu returned a softer one.

The video call ended.

Lin Yuewei sat in her chair for a long time without moving, then scratched at her hair and silently repeated two names in her mouth: Ke Bin, Shen Xue.

Jiang Congbi had just dropped her little girlfriend off at home and was exchanging an affectionate farewell through the car window when her phone on the seat buzzed wildly. She blew on the hand she had just extended into the warm air vent, then picked up the call.

It was Lin Yuewei.

Recently, Lin Yuewei had been focusing on filming and also busy dating; if she called her, it was mostly for a reason.

Jiang Congbi simply stopped hurrying home. She parked where she was and lazily said, "Hello" in the warm air of the car.

"I want to ask you something."

"Ask away."

"Do you know Ke Bin and Shen Xue?" Lin Yuewei asked. Jiang Congbi was different from her; Lin Yuewei had only one fixed little circle, while Jiang Congbi was enthusiastic about moving from one circle to another. She knew more than half the rich second-generation heirs in Yanning City.

"I know them, I guess. Not well. What’s up?"

"Tell me about them?"

"Hey, don’t rush to talk about them yet. Why are you asking?"

"Just... these two people are pursuing Gu Yanqiu now. I’m worried they’re not good people and that Gu Yanqiu will suffer."

"Jealous?"

"What else?" Lin Yuewei admitted readily this time. "Who wouldn’t be jealous? Who doesn’t have a sense of crisis?"

"Does Gu Yanqiu know?"

"Know what?"

"That you’re secretly looking into these two people."

"I didn’t look into them. I just asked. Makes it sound like I care that much about them." Lin Yuewei had also been so calm in front of Gu Yanqiu for this very reason; she wanted to fully express her trust in Gu Yanqiu, and she truly did trust the other woman.

"Fine, fine. Whatever you say." Jiang Congbi said, "But I’m not familiar with those two. Ke Bin has a pretty good reputation; he’s a gentleman. As for Shen Xue, she’s famously someone who plays multiple boats at once, with both men and women, and her boyfriends and girlfriends all get along in peace."

"Oh." Hearing that, Lin Yuewei actually felt relieved, especially about someone like Shen Xue. Surrounded by admirers, she probably wouldn’t have the energy to cling desperately to anyone.

Actually, the main reason she had called wasn’t this; it was something else.

"Did you pick out the gift I asked you to choose for me before?"

"When have I ever dropped the ball on something you told me to do? I bought it. T.C.’s new bracelet line. It looks pretty good; I couldn’t help buying one for myself too."

"Good. Give it to me when I get home after filming."

"Should I come find you?"

"I’ll come find you. Oh, do you have time? Don’t you need to keep your girlfriend company?"

Jiang Congbi choked. "That’s really hard to say. I’ll see then; let’s decide later."

"Then that’s that. I’m hanging up?"

"Wait a second." Jiang Congbi stopped her and hinted, "T.C. also has matching couple bracelets. They just came out. Why don’t you buy a pair with Gu Yanqiu?"

"I don’t like wearing bracelets, and neither does she. She plays with Buddhist prayer beads on her wrist."

"Fine."

"Why do I feel like you sighed just now?" Lin Yuewei noticed sharply.

"You heard wrong," Jiang Congbi said. "Bye."

She hung up first.

She had already hinted so clearly. Buying a gift wouldn’t kill you; do straight men choose gifts based purely on practicality? Were bracelets bought so they could be worn? Of course not; they were for showing off affection. Even if they just sat at home, you still had to buy them.

If she couldn’t be guided, then so be it; let her sink or swim on her own. She would get slapped in the face sooner or later.

***

Gu Yanqiu had not expected to see Yin Lingxi again so soon. One week later, at a business banquet held in Yanning, Yin Lingxi was wearing a black backless long dress and high-heeled stilettos. The hem of the dress dragged slightly on the floor as she held a champagne flute and moved gracefully through the crowd.

When Gu Yanqiu saw her, she gave a faint nod; but then she saw the tail of Yin Lingxi’s dress accidentally stepped on by a man, her heel twisting, the champagne in her hand and her whole body both tipping toward Gu Yanqiu’s direction.

Gu Yanqiu reacted quickly, stepping forward to catch the falling Yin Lingxi, but she couldn’t escape the fate of being splashed with wine.

The liquid seeped into the dark blue fabric, blooming into a deeper stain.

Gu Yanqiu frowned. She took the tissues handed over by a waiter and slowly wiped at the wet spot, but a fair hand holding tissue also reached out, about to brush against the front of Gu Yanqiu’s body. Gu Yanqiu took a step back.

Yin Lingxi: "Sorry."

Gu Yanqiu: "It’s fine. I’ll handle it myself."

Gu Yanqiu asked the manager who came over for a separate room. Lifting the hem of her dress, she walked toward the stairs. Yin Lingxi followed closely behind her, step for step. Before opening the door, Gu Yanqiu turned her head back. "Something wrong?"

Yin Lingxi bowed to her and said sincerely, "Whether you believe me or not, this was an accident."

"An accident?" Gu Yanqiu was already a few centimeters taller than her, and with her heels on as well, she looked down slightly when meeting Yin Lingxi’s gaze. The light spilled from the corners of her eyes; her expression was faintly smiling, yet not smiling.

Yin Lingxi looked at her coldly. "What do you mean?"
