Chapter 131
"All right," Gu Yanqiu said.
Lin Yuewei: "..."
She agreed just like that? This wasn’t quite how Lin Yuewei had imagined it. Shouldn’t Gu Yanqiu at least try to reason with her and move her emotionally? There had to be some kind of plot here!
Lin Yuewei’s gaze sharpened.
Gu Yanqiu must be planning to launch an attack on the spot. Acting so calm right now was only to lower her guard, so things would go more smoothly later.
She warned herself to stay alert. By then, Gu Yanqiu had already walked past her with a towel wrapped around her hair. "Let me blow-dry my hair first," she said in that same mild tone.
Lin Yuewei took a step and followed.
"I’ll do it for you."
Gu Yanqiu looked at her and raised a brow, then handed over the hair dryer she’d just picked up.
Lin Yuewei put one hand on Gu Yanqiu’s shoulder and made her sit cross-legged on the bed, then turned on the dryer. Gu Yanqiu tilted her head back slightly, phone in hand, looking at Lin Yuewei’s Weibo homepage.
Lin Yuewei’s fingers combed through her hair; naturally, they landed on the lit phone screen, which happened to stop on the selfie she’d taken last time with Schrödinger. Gu Yanqiu enlarged the photo to look closely at Lin Yuewei’s face. Lin Yuewei watched her study it for ten-odd seconds and asked, "Pretty?"
Gu Yanqiu hummed and said, "Pretty."
Lin Yuewei narrowed her eyes, thinking: she’s openly looking at her own photo in front of me and even sweet-talking me; this must be part of her plan too. She couldn’t let herself be fooled by a little sweetness.
Lin Yuewei looked away and concentrated on drying Gu Yanqiu’s hair.
Gu Yanqiu’s hair was much longer than Lin Yuewei’s cut version, nearly waist-length. After finishing, Lin Yuewei knelt on one knee as usual to gather up the fallen strands and toss them into the trash, joking, "Are you going bald?"
Somewhere along the way, the masses of young people had acquired a shared worry: hair loss, and the situation was serious.
Gu Yanqiu gathered her hair into a bundle and squeezed it. For no apparent reason, she said, "No way. You lose hair when you comb it normally too. This is only a few strands; it still feels thick to me."
Lin Yuewei: "..."
She went to wash her hands. After drying them, she came back and looked into Gu Yanqiu’s eyes. "Do you even go online?"
"I do." During the time Lin Yuewei had been washing her hands, the studious Gu Yanqiu had already looked up the "hair loss" meme online and even read a few funny comic strips. "But I hadn’t looked into this one before."
"Then you’d better not. It’s better not to go online."
"...Oh." Gu Yanqiu looked very well-behaved when she answered. Her freshly dried long hair was fluffy, standing up a little soft and messy.
...So well-behaved it made one want to bully her.
Lin Yuewei felt a stir of movement in her heart. She swallowed, then placed a hand on Gu Yanqiu’s shoulder and gave a light push. Gu Yanqiu fell back onto the bed, one hand drawing the open bathrobe together at the front, looking up at her from below with clear eyes.
Lin Yuewei frowned.
Gu Yanqiu lay there at ease, then suddenly curled her lips, half-smiling as she looked at her. "Can you?"
Lin Yuewei heard that and nearly exploded. She pulled herself back from the edge of actually blowing up. Gu Yanqiu was deliberately provoking her; she couldn’t fall for it. If she got angry, Gu Yanqiu would surely be able to carry out her plan more smoothly.
Lin Yuewei also smiled. "You guess."
Gu Yanqiu shook her head. "I’m not guessing."
Lin Yuewei lifted a brow and, putting on what she thought was a very dominant air, said, "You can feel it directly."
Unexpectedly, Gu Yanqiu couldn’t hold it in and laughed without restraint.
Lin Yuewei still held herself together, slowly going down on one knee on the bed. Just like Gu Yanqiu had done to her the first time, she pulled her partly into her arms, braced her at the back of the neck, and gave her a long, deep kiss.
Whatever else could be said, Lin Yuewei’s kissing skills were now, one might say, exquisite. When they parted, she used her fingertip to wipe the corner of Gu Yanqiu’s mouth and, meeting her hazy gaze, preened, "So? Think I can or not?"
Gu Yanqiu laughed softly at that.
There was no other meaning in her laugh. It was just that Lin Yuewei looked too cute like this, so she laughed once. In the past, she had clearly insisted on matching Lin Yuewei blow for blow in situations like this; later, after being suppressed a few times, she’d gradually gotten used to it. Now that she had finally regained the upper hand, she was actually this guilty.
But in Lin Yuewei’s ears, that laugh sounded like mockery.
Lin Yuewei took a deep breath and steadied her mind.
It was fine; don’t get angry.
Gu Yanqiu waited a little and, seeing Lin Yuewei quietly regulating her breathing with her eyes closed, shifted restlessly. Lin Yuewei’s heart jolted. As expected, Gu Yanqiu really did have a scheme; she was going to strike on the spot and change her mind at the last minute.
How could Lin Yuewei let her succeed?
Gu Yanqiu had been in one position too long and was starting to feel uncomfortable, so she was preparing to adjust herself when a shadow suddenly fell over her. Lin Yuewei kissed her again, this time so forcefully it left no room for her to catch her breath.
At some point, Gu Yanqiu began letting out muffled sounds. The atmosphere in the room instantly changed, like a drop of water falling into hot oil; it crackled and burst into heat.
***
By the end, they were both drenched in sweat. Gu Yanqiu went to the bathroom to shower, while Lin Yuewei sat on the bed, unable to come back to herself for a long while.
Wasn’t there supposed to be some underhanded scheme?
Why had she encountered no resistance from start to finish? Aside from Gu Yanqiu not really wanting to make a sound, it had been practically a perfect experience.
Lin Yuewei lowered her head and stared at her own hand, dazed.
What Gu Yanqiu saw when she came back out was Lin Yuewei holding up her right hand—the one that had just been inside—right under her nose, curious and puzzled, lightly sniffing it: "..."
Lin Yuewei looked up, saw Gu Yanqiu’s hard-to-describe expression, and hurriedly tucked her hand behind her back.
"Um... I wasn’t—"
Gu Yanqiu flushed with embarrassment and anger, grabbed the corner of the blanket, and with a rustle, threw it over Lin Yuewei.
Lin Yuewei finished the second half of her sentence inside the blanket: "...doing it on purpose." She was just verifying it; there really was a scent on her fingers, it was real! She really had topped Gu Yanqiu!
Gu Yanqiu slapped her through the blanket. "Go wash up."
Lin Yuewei poked her head out from under the blanket, smiling with obvious ill intent. "Why should I wash?"
Gu Yanqiu hadn’t even reacted before Lin Yuewei had already lunged over with the blanket still wrapped around herself, covering Gu Yanqiu too.
Soon enough, the room was filled once more with the same familiar sounds as before.
A night of indulgence.
***
On Lunar New Year’s Eve, the first day of the holiday, Gu Yanqiu slept until noon.
Lin Yuewei was a little better than her, opening her eyes at 11:30. She’d woken up hungry and had originally planned to go downstairs in search of food, but before she even made it down, she first caught sight of Ran Qingqing sitting on the sofa below, shooting her a fierce look upward. Lin Yuewei got so startled she retreated.
...Better to go down together with Gu Yanqiu; that would be safer.
Lin Yuewei was physically and mentally refreshed in every sense of the word, full of energy, and after returning, she couldn’t fall asleep again.
She stood by the window with her arms folded, looking out at the scenery for a while. Then she glanced back at Gu Yanqiu, who was still asleep, went back, and lay down under the covers again. With her eyes closed, lying on her side, she put on a half-awake voice and softly called, "...I’m cold."
Gu Yanqiu, who had been lying flat, immediately turned onto her side too. Her warm body pressed against Lin Yuewei’s, one arm circling her waist and resting against her back, patting her gently twice.
Lin Yuewei opened her eyes, looking at Gu Yanqiu’s lashes resting together without the slightest sign of waking, and felt warmth swelling in her chest.
Actions in sleep were the hardest to fake.
Lin Yuewei observed Gu Yanqiu from so close by. She reached out a finger and lightly touched her eyebrow. Gu Yanqiu’s brows weren’t thick; they resembled a soft autumn-water brow, and if you didn’t look closely, you might even think they were gray. Every hair was distinct, and when she slept, her brows seemed faintly furrowed.
From the center of her brows down to the philtrum, Lin Yuewei’s fingertip slid along that gentle curve and came to rest on her perfectly shaped lips. Her fingertip pressed slightly, then relaxed; the soft flesh bounced back gently.
She pressed again and again. Then Lin Yuewei leaned in and kissed her. Their lips met in a naturally relaxed state, soft beyond words. Lin Yuewei’s heart trembled with it, and she couldn’t help lifting Gu Yanqiu’s cheek to deepen the kiss.
In her sleep, Gu Yanqiu caught the tip of her tongue. Her brow tightened slightly; then she opened her eyes, confusion in them.
Lin Yuewei let her go and said awkwardly, "Sorry for waking you."
Gu Yanqiu saw clearly who was in front of her and said, "It’s fine." After a pause, she asked, "What time is it?"
"Not late. Just twelve."
"!!!" Gu Yanqiu started to sit up, but Lin Yuewei pushed her back down again. "It’s the holiday. Can’t you indulge yourself a little?"
Gu Yanqiu laughed softly. "Indulging yourself until twelve is too late." She patted the hand Lin Yuewei had resting on her shoulder. "We should get up and eat. Auntie must be overthinking things."
Lin Yuewei replied, "If you go down now, won’t my mom overthink it anyway?"
Gu Yanqiu: "..." Though it made sense, "but..."
"No buts. Going down now and going down in the afternoon makes no difference; she’ll keep food warm for us."
"Afternoon?"
Gu Yanqiu’s newly awakened brain wasn’t quite clear yet and she hadn’t fully processed it. Lin Yuewei was already staring straight at her. "I’m hungry."
Gu Yanqiu laughed. "Then I’m saying we should go downstairs and eat."
Lin Yuewei leaned down, precisely bit her earlobe, and muffled, "I mean that kind of hungry."
So they had a little appetizer before the meal.
After washing up, the two of them went downstairs. Just as they neared the staircase, Lin Yuewei tugged on Gu Yanqiu’s sleeve and shook it lightly. In a low voice, she said, "You walk in front."
Gu Yanqiu asked, "Why?"
Lin Yuewei answered, "My mom’s going to hit me."
Gu Yanqiu frowned. "No way."
Lin Yuewei looked utterly certain. "You’ll see in a bit whether she does."
The moment Gu Yanqiu reached the bottom of the stairs, a throw pillow flew at her face. It wasn’t moving too fast; she lifted a hand and caught it. Lin Yuewei, standing behind her, shot her a knowing look and grew even less daring to stick her head out.
Ran Qingqing said, "What kind of woman hides behind another woman?"
Lin Yuewei used Gu Yanqiu as a shield, poked her head out, then shrank back at once. "I’m not a woman; I’m still a little girl."
Ran Qingqing: "Pah."
A large human-shaped accessory was hanging off Gu Yanqiu’s back. She asked, "Auntie, is there still lunch?"
Ran Qingqing stood up. "There is. I sent the auntie home for the New Year, so I cooked lunch myself. I’ll heat it up for you."
Gu Yanqiu hurriedly said, "No need, I’ll heat it myself."
Ran Qingqing said, "Let Lin Yuewei do it."
Lin Yuewei finally had a chance to "atone through service," so she immediately detached herself from Gu Yanqiu’s back and darted into the kitchen. "Leave it to me; nobody’s taking this from me."
Gu Yanqiu’s waist was a little sore and her legs were weak, so she sat down on the sofa. As for Ran Qingqing, there was even less need to mention it; she had never planned to help Lin Yuewei in the first place.
Once neither of them was fighting with her for the job, Lin Yuewei actually got lonely. She stood in the doorway and acted out for a while, only to realize no one was paying attention to her. So she gave up and honestly started reheating the dishes.
Ran Qingqing asked after Gu Yanqiu with concern while also criticizing Lin Yuewei, and the two of them chatted enthusiastically.
"Food’s ready."
Gu Yanqiu politely nodded at Ran Qingqing, but at the kitchen doorway, Lin Yuewei blocked her way back. "Just sit there. I’ll serve you." Then, in a voice that carried to her mother, she said, "You worked hard last night."
Gu Yanqiu: "..."
She shouldn’t have softened last night and let Lin Yuewei get her way and then act all smug about it.
After lunch, Lin Yuewei kept circling around Gu Yanqiu, attentive from head to toe. Ran Qingqing couldn’t stand to look at it anymore. "Lin Yuewei, are you a dog?"
Lin Yuewei paused for a second, then said, "Woof."
The corgi at home joined in with a cheerful chorus: "Woof woof woof."
Gu Yanqiu smiled and used a hand to push Lin Yuewei’s forehead away a little, then reached into her pocket and took out her phone. The reply she’d sent Gu Feiquan last night had only just come back now.
[Jiabei: What do you need to call me for?]
[Xigu: Nothing. Are you at the hospital now?]
[Jiabei: Yes. Are you coming today too?]
Gu Yanqiu looked up at Lin Yuewei. Lin Yuewei said, "Go?"
[Xigu: I should go.]
[Jiabei: Then I’ll wait for you at the hospital.]
[Xigu: You said yesterday you weren’t feeling well?]
[Jiabei: You heard wrong.]
[Jiabei: I’ve got something to do. I’m busy first.]
Lin Yuewei rested her chin on her hand and watched the whole conversation, saying, "Does your cute little brother seem a bit unhappy?"
"How do you mean?"
"He didn’t even send you an emoji, and his tone is really stiff."
"I think so too."
"When are you going to the hospital? Are you still coming back for dinner tonight?" Today was New Year’s Eve dinner; not only Lin Yuewei, even Ran Qingqing looked over. The two of them both watched Gu Yanqiu.
Gu Yanqiu couldn’t say for sure. "I’ll know after I go to the hospital. I’ll text you later."
Ran Qingqing said considerately, "It’s fine. Keeping your dad company is more important."
"Mm." Gu Yanqiu nodded, then looked at Lin Yuewei. "Are you coming to the hospital with me?"
"Me?"
"Didn’t you ask for a Guanyin statue for my dad? Don’t you want to deliver it personally?" Gu Yanqiu looked at her with a smile.
"That..." Lin Yuewei was still hesitating. To be honest, based on the impression she’d had of Gu Huai from the few times she’d met him, she had always kept a respectful distance. And before, he had been her partner’s father; now he was her father-in-law. Just thinking about it made her nervous.
Ran Qingqing spoke up. "Go on. Yanqiu’s father is your father too. He’s seriously ill; it wouldn’t be proper not to visit him."
Lin Yuewei nodded heavily. "Okay, I’ll go."
Ran Qingqing said, "Buy some flowers and fruit too."
Lin Yuewei made a note of it.
***
At 3:00 p.m., Gu Yanqiu and Lin Yuewei had changed clothes and, after greeting Ran Qingqing, who was making dumplings at the table, went out and headed for the hospital.
Gu Yanqiu was driving; Lin Yuewei sat in the passenger seat, both hands clasped together, her eyes closed.
Gu Yanqiu asked, "What are you doing?"
Lin Yuewei opened her eyes. "What am I supposed to say to your dad? Also, how’s your dad’s health? Can he still speak now?"
Gu Yanqiu laughed. "He’s fine, of course he can speak. It’s not like this is your first time seeing him; you weren’t this nervous before."
Lin Yuewei lifted her neck stubbornly. "That’s different."
Gu Yanqiu asked with curiosity, "How is it different?"
"Anyway," Lin Yuewei refused to say more, "anyway it’s different. I’m not asking you anymore; I’ll think about it myself."
Gu Yanqiu said, "Fine, fine. Think about it."
When Lin Yuewei got out of the car, her left foot caught her right and she stumbled. Gu Yanqiu quickly reached out and steadied her arm, joking, "Did you drink fake liquor?"
Lin Yuewei glared at her and ignored her, walking inside. After a couple of steps, she stopped and waited for Gu Yanqiu; she didn’t know which ward he was in.
Gu Yanqiu touched the bridge of her nose and walked up with a smile to take her hand.
Gu Feiquan had given them the new ward number.
Gu Yanqiu found the room and knocked. The one who opened the door was He Songjun. With Gu Huai in this state, He Songjun no longer seemed to have the energy to keep clashing with her; she gave a faint nod and let them in.
Gu Yanqiu called out to the person on the hospital bed, "Dad."
Lin Yuewei removed both her mask and hat, then followed suit, greeting him generously and properly, "Dad."
Gu Huai looked at her and clearly showed a trace of surprise.
...Gu Huai had probably forgotten he even had a daughter-in-law like this.
Lin Yuewei placed the lily bouquet on the cabinet by the bed, while Gu Feiquan took the fruit basket. She thought: I’m a little awkward here.
Gu Yanqiu also felt the atmosphere was strange and took the lead in smoothing things over. She said to Gu Huai, "Yuewei heard that you were ill, so yesterday she and her mother went to XX Temple and specifically asked for a peace amulet for you."
"Weiwei." She called to Lin Yuewei.
Lin Yuewei hurriedly opened her shoulder bag and took out a red box. She opened it and showed it to Gu Huai. Gu Huai smiled faintly, his face pale, and said, "Thank you. I like it very much. That was thoughtful of you."
Lin Yuewei replied meekly, "It’s what I should do."
Gu Huai pointed to the bedside cabinet beside him. Gu Yanqiu pulled it open for him, and Gu Huai said, "There are red envelopes inside. Take two."
Gu Yanqiu searched and indeed found three red envelopes. She took out two, feeling heavy in her hand, and handed them to Gu Huai. Gu Huai beckoned to the two of them, and Lin and Gu stepped closer. He placed a red envelope in each of their hands.
"Happy New Year’s Eve; your lucky money," he said with a smile. Then his hand lowered a little and he coughed softly.
Gu Yanqiu sat on the edge of the bed and helped him catch his breath.
Lin Yuewei turned to look at He Songjun and Gu Feiquan. Gu Feiquan stood a few steps away, quietly watching; there was a dark smudge under his eyes, suggesting he hadn’t slept well last night. He Songjun was sitting on the sofa by the window too, also looking this way, her gaze drifting and deep like a ghost.
Lin Yuewei nudged Gu Yanqiu’s back from behind and signaled to her. Gu Yanqiu followed her gaze and mouthed, "What is it?"
When Lin Yuewei turned her head back, He Songjun had already returned to her normal, slightly sorrowful expression.
At 5:30 in the afternoon, Gu Yanqiu had still been hesitating over whether to stay longer at the hospital when Gu Huai took the initiative and said, "Your mother-in-law must have prepared New Year’s Eve dinner at home. You and Yuewei should go back and eat; your brother will stay here."
Gu Feiquan also said, "Right. Go back."
Gu Yanqiu nodded. As she passed Gu Feiquan, she glanced at him; Gu Feiquan understood immediately and said to Gu Huai and He Songjun, "I’ll go out and see them off."
The three of them went together to the hospital rooftop.
Gu Yanqiu asked, "Any new information?"
Gu Feiquan stood with one hand in his pocket and shook his head.
Gu Yanqiu stared at his eyes. After a moment, she said with certainty, "You’re hiding something from me."
Gu Feiquan smiled, blinked, and said, "I am not."
Gu Yanqiu said, "What did Dad say?"
Gu Feiquan still shook his head. "Nothing much."
Gu Huai’s words plainly showed that he didn’t want them to uncover the truth from the past. If you followed that line of reasoning, then the truth from back then might have been something that would hurt the younger generation. Gu Feiquan wasn’t so foolish as to think he was the person Gu Huai didn’t want to hurt; the person he wanted to protect was Gu Yanqiu. He had hidden the matter of Shen Huaiyu all this time; besides Gu Yanqiu, he couldn’t think of any other reason.
Gu Yanqiu’s brows shot up. "Didn’t we already agree? There’s nothing we keep from each other."
Gu Feiquan lowered his head and looked at her. "Can’t I change my mind now?"
Gu Yanqiu said, "You—"
Lin Yuewei pulled Gu Yanqiu back and signaled that she’d take over. She turned to Gu Feiquan and said, "You’d better think carefully. It’s not easy to raise your favorability with her. You’ve finally almost maxed it out; if you back out now, all your earlier effort will be wasted."
Gu Feiquan really did show hesitation.
Lin Yuewei threatened him further. "And if you ever send her emojis again, I’ll make Gu Yanqiu block you. There’s nothing to say to someone who goes back on their word."
Gu Yanqiu’s eyes widened slightly: this works too?
Gu Feiquan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Fine, I’ll say it."
As it turned out, it really did work. Dealing with a sister complex; one move to defeat him.
Gu Feiquan repeated Gu Huai’s words. Gu Yanqiu’s brows furrowed, and Lin Yuewei also opened her mouth. Gu Yanqiu looked at Lin Yuewei, signaling for her to speak first, so Lin Yuewei said, "Uncle Gu said that the matter from thirty years ago should be completely settled with him; let the dust return to dust, the earth to earth. He also said that since it’s become a rotten account, what’s the point of arguing over who was right and who was wrong? These words imply..." She looked at the pair of siblings in front of her, both of them fixed intently on her, "I’m just guessing casually, but do they imply that all three people in this old matter were at fault; or that the one most at fault might not necessarily be him? Otherwise, why would it be called a rotten account? On the surface, only Uncle Gu abandoned one person for another, while Aunt He... gave birth to the child, and Aunt Shen merely married Uncle Gu. Neither of those two seems to have made a very big mistake."
Both of them fell silent.
Lin Yuewei scratched her hair. "I’m just saying it casually; you can just listen casually." She wasn’t a member of the Gu family and didn’t know the twists and turns inside; she could only analyze based on the relationships currently presented.
Gu Feiquan’s voice was low. "Go on."
Gu Yanqiu gave her an encouraging look.
Lin Yuewei continued, "Aunt He gave birth to the child; that’s an established fact. But why did she give birth to the child? What prompted her to have a child out of wedlock? In that era, making a decision like that would have taken a lot of courage."
From Lin Yuewei’s understanding of He Songjun, plus Gu Yanqiu’s descriptions, He Songjun really didn’t seem like someone that formidable. If she truly had that kind of courage, could she have just stood by and watched Gu Huai abandon her to marry another woman? Could she have lain low for more than thirty years without making a single move? Just waiting for Gu Huai to have a change of heart and come back to marry her? Putting that aside, if He Songjun was really that strong and independent, why was she still so dead set on hanging on to Gu Huai, that crooked-necked tree? A toad with three legs is hard to find; there are plenty of men with two.
Lin Yuewei said, "Did Uncle Gu deceive her? For example, he promised something and didn’t keep it, promised to marry her and then didn’t? Did your mother ever tell you about that?"
Gu Feiquan said, "My mom said that after she got pregnant with me, I was very active in her belly, and she couldn’t bear to let me go, so she kept me."
Lin Yuewei felt like the whole thing was a mess and skipped over that part, moving on to the next question and aiming at Shen Huaiyu.
"Actually, I don’t think Aunt Shen did anything wrong," she said. "Based on Uncle Gu’s account, he only went after her after breaking up with Aunt He. Then there’s nothing wrong with Aunt Shen agreeing, right? Nobody can prove she knew beforehand that Uncle Gu had a pregnant ex-girlfriend outside, can they? Even if she did know, Uncle Gu and Aunt He weren’t married yet, so at most you could say she was blind and still married Uncle Gu knowing full well. Her fault can’t be as big as Uncle Gu’s."
Gu Yanqiu said, "Right."
"The most important point is why the truth shouldn’t be found." As an outsider looking in, things were clearer, and Lin Yuewei clicked her tongue. "There’s a huge flaw in that sentence."
The Gu siblings looked at her eagerly, which actually made Lin Yuewei a little embarrassed. She cleared her throat and said, "Think about it: Uncle Gu abandoned one person for another, straddled two boats, and then caused all these later events. Does he still have any reputation left? So if the truth shouldn’t be found, then the thing he’s protecting definitely isn’t himself, but someone else."
That person’s name was practically on the tip of everyone’s tongue.
Gu Yanqiu felt a jolt in her chest; her pulse started racing.
As if responding to her heartbeat, the phone in her pocket suddenly rang sharply.
Gu Yanqiu saw who was calling.
—Mr. Liu.
Gu Yanqiu closed her eyes and pressed the answer button. Her voice trembled slightly. "Hello?"
Mr. Liu said, "It’s been verified. The person who died in the car accident two years ago was your mother’s ex-girlfriend."
Mr. Liu said, "I also found some coincidental details. Your mother and your father met, and also broke up with each other, in the same year. Your mother and her ex-girlfriend each married men in the same year as well."
Mr. Liu said, "And there’s one more thing I find a bit unbelievable; I can’t guarantee it. Your mother’s health had always been very good. It only started declining after that woman died, until she finally passed away too. It’s reasonable to suspect that... she died of heartbreak."
