What Can You Do to Me?
The people outside watched her go in, and seeing that she hadn't closed the door, they followed her in.
They stood behind the sofa, and soon five or six strangers entered—the backup sent from District Two to pick up their people. Song Weishi found it absurd. When it came to rescuing someone, they claimed they couldn't spare the manpower, but when it came to picking someone up, they showed up in an instant. Loyalty certainly had its timing.
They stared at the newcomers with contempt, though the latter seemed completely oblivious, showing no shame under the scrutiny.
"Thank you, Chief Xie. Since everyone's here, we'll take him and be on our way. We won't trouble you further."
With that, they moved to leave. Wei Qing rose wearily, adjusted his glasses, nodded to Xie Huiqing, and prepared to go.
Xie Huiqing, still smiling, spoke up. "Wait a moment. There's something I'd like to clarify."
Wei Qing sat back down, letting out a heavy snort of air. Clearly displeased, but constrained by Xie Huiqing's status, he couldn't very well refuse. "What is it?"
Xie Huiqing didn't beat around the bush. "You impersonated me outside the city to seduce women, then told them to come find me if they had any trouble. Didn't you?"
The moment the words left her mouth, Wei Qing's expression stiffened. He quickly recovered his composure, but that instant of genuine reaction couldn't be hidden.
Understanding dawned on everyone. So it really had been him.
Only the people from District Two listened in bafflement, completely lost.
Enraged and embarrassed, Wei Qing slammed the table. "Nonsense! I know you have a big ego, Chief Xie, and you've had it out for me for a while now, but you can't just slander me like that. I never did such a thing."
Xie Huiqing smiled. "Is that so? Then let me bring someone in to confront you directly."
With that, she raised her hand and spoke into the device on her wrist. "Let them in."
Rapid footsteps sounded from outside, and a haggard woman pushed through the door. The man behind her, once robust and strong, had also withered over the past few days—clearly, times had been hard for them.
The woman scanned the room, her gaze quickly locking onto Wei Qing. She practically lunged at him, grabbing his collar and shaking him violently. "You bastard! You told me you were the second-in-command of District One! You lied to me! You animal!"
The people behind Wei Qing quickly pulled them apart, but not before the woman raked her nails across his face. His collar was torn askew, and his earlier composure was utterly shattered.
"Let go of me! Are you even human? You're all animals! Let me go!"
The woman struggled desperately, but it was futile. The man behind her tried to help, but outnumbered and outmatched, he was quickly subdued and pinned down.
Xie Huiqing looked at Wei Qing, whose face had darkened, with a smirk. "Well, Director Wei? Nothing to say now?"
Wei Qing's face was livid as he stared at the hysterical woman. He hadn't expected her to actually find her way here. No matter how he tried to deny it, it was pointless now.
He could've refused to admit it, stuck to his story, but his image had already been tarnished. Who knew what these people were thinking now.
Sure enough, the people from District Two wore strange expressions, not daring to meet his eyes, remaining silent as they held the two down.
Wei Qing decided to cut his losses, leaning back in his chair with a careless air. "So what? Xie Huiqing, what can you do to me? You're just a girl barely out of diapers. You think just because you're the second-in-command of District One, you can talk back to me? Who do you think you are? Using your name was a favor to you. You could've just gotten rid of that problem for me. It's no big deal—women like her, you just deal with them."
Song Weishi nearly gagged. Were the people of District Two insane? How could they have a leader like this?
Unable to stand it any longer, several people moved to strike him, but Xie Huiqing held up a hand to stop them. Reluctantly, they backed off.
"I'll handle this myself."
Seeing her make no move, Wei Qing relaxed further, his base nature fully exposed, his words growing even more outrageous. "Alright, stop crying. Being my subordinate is an honor for you. All you people should—"
He never finished. A thunderous bang rang out, and a bullet hole appeared in Wei Qing's forehead. He was still in mid-sentence, his face frozen in shock.
Xie Huiqing stood straight, one hand in her pocket, the other holding a gun. She had dispatched Wei Qing cleanly, without a single wasted word.
Everyone was stunned for a moment, staring at the now-dead Wei Qing. A splatter of blood bloomed behind him, his hand that had been pointing at Xie Huiqing fell limply to his side, and he slumped back, dead.
The woman on the ground stopped screaming, staring blankly at the dead man on the sofa. Tears had welled up in her eyes, and she began to cry silently, a smile still lingering on her face.
The people from District Two snapped out of their shock, released the two on the ground, and rushed at Xie Huiqing. "Xie Huiqing, are you out of your goddamn mind?!"
Xie Huiqing turned slightly, still smiling, and pressed the gun to the forehead of the man in front. "Get out. You can take him now. I'll cut off all resource supplies to District Two. Your provisional government is hereby dissolved. All citizens of District Two fall under our jurisdiction. Huihai City—from this moment on—is under my control."
The men stared at the gun muzzle, anger burning in their eyes but their mouths clamped shut. This Chief Xie was a smiling tiger, a woman who never minced words or changed her mind.
Director Wei really had it coming. Why on earth did he think he could mess with her?
They took a moment to compose themselves, wisely backed off, and left, leaving the two on the ground behind.
The square-faced captain came back in, along with several others carrying a stretcher. They loaded the body onto it and carried it out, and a cleaner came in to tidy up. It was all so routine.
Song Weishi gave Xie Huiqing a mental thumbs-up. Well done. You couldn't show mercy to scum like that, or they'd just get worse. Let it slide once, and there'd be a second time. This man had hurt so many people—he deserved to die.
The others took it in stride, all except Jiang Qingrou, who covered her mouth, her body trembling slightly. It was her first time seeing someone killed, and it made her uneasy. She held it in for a moment, then couldn't take it anymore and ran outside to throw up.
Ke Shaoyi followed her out with a worried look. She was genuinely concerned about every team member. Song Weishi wanted to check on her too, but Xie Huiqing called her back.
"You three, come with me. I have something to discuss."
She holstered her gun and walked toward the meeting room. Song Weishi quickly shot a message to Ke Shaoyi to look after Jiang Qingrou, then followed.
"I'd planned to send you to Binhai City a few days ago, but the past few days have been too hectic and it kept getting delayed. Their medical equipment is vital. Take the next two days to prepare. You're going—there's no question about it. Bring the supplies back safely."
Xie Huiqing projected a map onto the electronic screen and circled several key points.
As a security team member with extraordinary self-healing abilities, Song Weishi was definitely going on this mission. She gazed at the map on the wall. Having grown used to life in Huihai City, she really didn't want to leave. That oven-like heat—once you'd gotten a taste of cool comfort, you never wanted to experience it again.
Chu Miaoxuan stood up. "We'll get it done."
Xie Huiqing turned to the other two. "Any problems?"
Song Weishi and Xie Yi answered in unison. "No problems."
But Song Weishi couldn't shake a nagging sense of unease. If Xie Yi was on the mission, the difficulty would probably double.
Still, there was no choice. They were in the same city, on the same security team. From now on, their paths would only cross more and more.
Since avoiding contact was impossible, the only option was to quickly strengthen herself so she wouldn't die too miserably.
Song Weishi silently cheered herself on, then heard Xie Huiqing say, "Good, I believe in you. But you also need to protect yourselves. Don't worry about anything else—I'll always be behind you."
Having a leader like Xie Huiqing was actually pretty great, to be honest. She was a woman of insight and decisiveness, never dragging her feet. From this, it was clear that the Xie family shared a similar temperament—cut from the same mold.
Xie Yi, though, was a bit more laid-back, but she was growing fast too. With the strength of these two, the Xie family would soon have Huihai City firmly in their grasp.
Of course, that was just Song Weishi's personal opinion. The future held too many uncertainties. Nothing was set in stone. Taking it one step at a time was the smartest move right now.
The three of them said in unison, "We'll get it done."
Xie Huiqing smiled and waved them out.
The specific departure time was in three days. Chu Miaoxuan quickly sent the plan to both their wrist communicators. This time, besides the four of them as newbies, the other twenty-plus were veterans, so it was a mix of old and new. Their newbies weren't weak either, though.
Song Weishi rested for two days. During those days, besides fighting monsters and doing daily checkups, there wasn't much else to do.
But the news online was in an uproar. Huihai City's leadership was finalized, and since Xie Huiqing already had immense credibility among the citizens, few spoke out against her killing Wei Qing.
After the apocalypse, the public was especially sensitive about their leaders. Wei Qing had a terrible reputation to begin with, and Xie Huiqing's elimination of him was met with widespread approval, rallying a fervent following.
Their devotion to Xie Huiqing reached an extreme. Within two days, besides dealing with the insect plague, Huihai City's upper echelon had undergone a complete overhaul. Song Weishi suspected Xie Huiqing had planned this all along. Achieving all this in nearly two months was no small feat—she had to admit, the woman was truly impressive.
Though she wasn't officially the top leader yet, everyone knew who really called the shots.
Under the official call, everyone eagerly joined the insect-catching teams.
The large mutated insects were handled by the authorities, while the smaller ones dwindled rapidly under the relentless iron nets of capture tools. During this time, someone even flattened and fried green lacewings, discovering they made a delicious crispy snack. After posting about it online with high praise, it sparked a citywide craze for catching them.
Song Weishi initially thought it was some official ploy, but when she clicked on the person's profile, she found he'd been a mukbang streamer before, eating all sorts of bizarre things. This was his own initiative, and he was raking in views.
Many tried it after seeing his posts, and finding the taste surprisingly good, residents who hadn't had meat in a long time turned it into an extra source of nutrition. The green lacewing population in the city plummeted. And honestly, the method did work.
Song Weishi couldn't help but admire the wisdom of the working class, coming up with ideas like that.
She rested for two days, comfortably lounging until the day of departure arrived. The big trucks outside were ready, and the final team count was set at sixty people, splitting up to head to different areas and transport medical equipment from several hospitals all at once.
Song Weishi sat in the vehicle. The weather was nice today, the sun shining bright. She set off for Binhai City.
